Women Empowerment in Sindh
Revised.
SANOBAR SHORO
Women empowerment has different meaning for women from
different parts of the country. Unfortunately Sindh is among those Provinces of
Pakistan in which gender inequality is very pronounced and women continue to be
oppressed in society, there is social environment that never allows women to be
empowered.
Sindh is divided into two parts urban Sindh and rural Sindh.
In urban areas women is little empower, politically, financially and in
decision making. A little progress has been seen in previous 10 years, relating
to representation in job market, government offices, educational institutions
and business enterprises.
If we throw light on the participation ratio of women in the
political and economical activities has been increased as compare to a decade
before.
Where as situation in the rural area is totally opposite of
it. In rural Sindh women discriminated against in almost all walks of life. We know that domestic violence in Sindh is
increasing. The main reason behind this are lack of knowledge, education and
awareness about woman’s rights.domestic voilence is a result of the socio
economic, political and cultural trends, and their influence on the daily life
of the rural women.it negatively impact all over the society. Domestic voilence
keeps rising due to woman’s subordinate position, illiteracy, low wages at
work, low skills level and level of participation. Domestic violence can be
seen in the form of honor killings, suicides, rape, sexual assault, torture and
other crimes. We have to improve the status of rural women by improving
education, social status and workload at home, at the farm and freedom of
expression on economic, social and cultural issues.
In rural areas she is not empowered, politically, financially
and decision making powers. She is totally depending on male. A woman has not
given right to take any decision, she is always under privileged in getting
Education, food and health care, she has no freedom to choose her life partner.
She can not take any decision of her life. Women are being victim of violence
if they ask for freedom. She is still being deprived of her rights still being
killed in honor killing particularly in the northern areas of Sindh.
Sindh assembly passed a Law to establish a commission on
status of women. This law was made to empower women and ensure their rights,
with full administrative and financial anatomy to monitor and oversee
compliance of provincial laws and international conventions and to high light
discriminatory practices, abuses and violation of women’s rights. The commission
will comprise 21 members and a Chair person who will be women. But all the laws
vanished. Sindh government has taken various steps for women empowerment but no
implementation was seen in rural areas. Government has met with negligible
success.
Current atmosphere is extremely hostile for women in rural
Sindh. Much needed will is required to root out the problems of women so that
they can play a progressive role in their own development. By making her strong
socially, politically and economically we bring positive change to the rural
environment. The solution lies in empowering women. If we empower her we also
bring socio economic change which helps improvement in income and building on
community development. We need to boost their skills. Most of the women’s
contribution to the household maintenance is 65% to 95% in all over the
Province and carry a heavy work load in major areas of agriculture, forming,
livestock, husbandry and of forms activities.
We always discuss the problems but never give solution. The
government of Sindh should take some important steps for women empowerment
promoting woman’s services. Investing in the potential of the country’s women
and girls is the one of the surest ways to achieve economic progress, political
stability and greater prosperity for women and men all over the world.
There should be supporting programs like Benazir income
support program and open some some centers to provide health care services,
legal assistance, counseling and temporary shelters for victims of violence.
She should have equal access to education, health care,
capital and decision making powers in political, social, and business
sectors.Grant equal job opportunities. She should be empowered With micro
credit to establish industry in rural areas of Sindh. Through microfinance
grants to help women become economically active and increase their incomes as
well as vocational training programs to encourage women to learn
skills.Government of Sindh should help rural women through agriculture program,
helping women farmers develop their skills and techniques to improve their
access to market.
It is not as if nothing is being done in sindh with regards
to women’s empowerment but whatever is being done is clearly not enough.
