Q: What inspired you to become an author?
Ans: The nature, the deserts and the people of my village inspired me. They were not educated but were having wide vision, the story telling people the herders were my teachers. My father was police officer I used to go with him to visit different jails where I used to observe the different criminals their stories and studied their nature I was very much interested in human nature hence i started writing. The skills were in my inherent I just needed the track which was given me by my step mother she guided me what is life and in telling her observation. She was more mother of mine than the real mother. She was robber but quite talented was very tall and beautiful.

Q: How much you highlighted Sindhi culture in your drama stories?
Ans: My 70% content is about the culture and the village life, whether it is drama story or any book story. Now a days I am writing a novel “Rustics” (Gothana), its also about the village life. It will be publish in America.

Q: It is generally said standard of Sindhi drama is low, do you agree?
Ans: Mostly the subject is shown the gun culture, Wadera system etc. Writers are focusing on such issues and they have no techniques they highlight the one side of the story there is no balance. If there is character of robber they only show his negativity they don’t tell that why did he become like this. A writer should write both the things real as well as fictitious than your story will be more interested.

Q: You wrote many dramas for Ptv, which was your most popular drama?
Ans: “Choti si dunya” was my most popular drama in all over the world people love to watch it even today. Dr Hellen Pasu wrote thesis on this drama (free university government) in German language named “small worlds”. She was very inspired of my drama. In this drama there was direct attack to the German people the Chief Justice of Punjab High Court Shoukat Rizwi said “Junejo bari safai se contempt of court se bach gaye”.

Q: How do you feel that people like Shabana Azmi, Parvez Musharrf are your fan?
Ans: Yes there are many personalities who are my biggest fan but for me all are equal an ordinary or a big personality it does not matter. My “Seerhiyan” drama was most popular in South Asia. Shabana Azmi became my fan watching this drama.

Q: You got two times Presidents Pride of Performance award where as its against of law, even you got it what were your feelings?
Ans: I’m first and last person who got this award, for the first time Ghulam Ishaq Khan awarded me and again in 2008 the great fan of mine Parvez Musharraf gave me the same award. When I was nominated for this and called in President House Musharaf asked me: You have written the “Choti si Dunya”, I said yes. He said to his adviser I am giving this Award to Abdul Qadir, his adviser said, Sir he has got already and there is no rule for second time. Musharaf said I am president and marked on my name and awarded me. It was prestigious pride for me.

Q:Why the PTV is losing viewership?
Ans: Ptv is about to finish the main reason is the producers and the directors they sell the time. When your production side is weak your story will be fail even if it is good. The directors do not catch the spirit of the script. Ptv is being watched only because of sports. The original work was spoiled. The directors died who made the Ptv popular. Now a days there are corrupt people of different parties, another reason is western culture. It is emerging rapidly.

Q: When & how the downfall starts of a writer?
Ans: When a writer become satisfied from his any written piece of story and become happy and feel himself genius in writing or skills his downfall starts.

Q: You are not writing any drama for last few years what is the reason? Were you not approached from any tv channel or there is another reason?
Ans: No, not at all. I am still asked to write drama but now I am Esnglish novel writer they cannot afford me. Few of the channels and directors approached me but i refused because now a days there is formula writing the directors ask the writer for dictation and write according their wish

Q: Any massage for young generation?
Ans: I never give massages or instruction to people but take messages from them. I always try to learn and observe the people because the learning process never ends. And still i m not satisfied from my work I still feel something is left.

WOMEN EMPOWERMENT in Pakistan - revised

Women Empowerment in Sindh
Revised.
SANOBAR SHORO
Women empowerment has different meaning for women from different parts of the country. Unfortunately Sindh is among those Provinces of Pakistan in which gender inequality is very pronounced and women continue to be oppressed in society, there is social environment that never allows women to be empowered.
Sindh is divided into two parts urban Sindh and rural Sindh. In urban areas women is little empower, politically, financially and in decision making. A little progress has been seen in previous 10 years, relating to representation in job market, government offices, educational institutions and business enterprises.
If we throw light on the participation ratio of women in the political and economical activities has been increased as compare to a decade before.
Where as situation in the rural area is totally opposite of it. In rural Sindh women discriminated against in almost all walks of life.  We know that domestic violence in Sindh is increasing. The main reason behind this are lack of knowledge, education and awareness about woman’s rights.domestic voilence is a result of the socio economic, political and cultural trends, and their influence on the daily life of the rural women.it negatively impact all over the society. Domestic voilence keeps rising due to woman’s subordinate position, illiteracy, low wages at work, low skills level and level of participation. Domestic violence can be seen in the form of honor killings, suicides, rape, sexual assault, torture and other crimes. We have to improve the status of rural women by improving education, social status and workload at home, at the farm and freedom of expression on economic, social and cultural issues.

In rural areas she is not empowered, politically, financially and decision making powers. She is totally depending on male. A woman has not given right to take any decision, she is always under privileged in getting Education, food and health care, she has no freedom to choose her life partner. She can not take any decision of her life. Women are being victim of violence if they ask for freedom. She is still being deprived of her rights still being killed in honor killing particularly in the northern areas of Sindh.
Sindh assembly passed a Law to establish a commission on status of women. This law was made to empower women and ensure their rights, with full administrative and financial anatomy to monitor and oversee compliance of provincial laws and international conventions and to high light discriminatory practices, abuses and violation of women’s rights. The commission will comprise 21 members and a Chair person who will be women. But all the laws vanished. Sindh government has taken various steps for women empowerment but no implementation was seen in rural areas. Government has met with negligible success.
Current atmosphere is extremely hostile for women in rural Sindh. Much needed will is required to root out the problems of women so that they can play a progressive role in their own development. By making her strong socially, politically and economically we bring positive change to the rural environment. The solution lies in empowering women. If we empower her we also bring socio economic change which helps improvement in income and building on community development. We need to boost their skills. Most of the women’s contribution to the household maintenance is 65% to 95% in all over the Province and carry a heavy work load in major areas of agriculture, forming, livestock, husbandry and of forms activities.
We always discuss the problems but never give solution. The government of Sindh should take some important steps for women empowerment promoting woman’s services. Investing in the potential of the country’s women and girls is the one of the surest ways to achieve economic progress, political stability and greater prosperity for women and men all over the world.
There should be supporting programs like Benazir income support program and open some some centers to provide health care services, legal assistance, counseling and temporary shelters for victims of violence.
She should have equal access to education, health care, capital and decision making powers in political, social, and business sectors.Grant equal job opportunities. She should be empowered With micro credit to establish industry in rural areas of Sindh. Through microfinance grants to help women become economically active and increase their incomes as well as vocational training programs to encourage women to learn skills.Government of Sindh should help rural women through agriculture program, helping women farmers develop their skills and techniques to improve their access to market.
It is not as if nothing is being done in sindh with regards to women’s empowerment but whatever is being done is clearly not enough.

KOTRI BARRAGE Revised

Revised
Feature: KOTRI BARRAGE

by SANOBER SHORO
ROLL NO 4

After 2010 this is huge amount of water flowing under Kotri Barrage looks even better in this time, Sindhu is in high flow, that’s why more people are here to enjoy it, when it flew in fury, those were the days. Malah (fisherman ) was fishing in the Sindhu. Over topping the banks, sweeping away sand and stones along the embankment of the Indus River finally water reached at Kotri Barrage. The flow increased nearly the same level like other barrages. Situation is not as serious as had been witnessed in 2010.

Huge crowd, love to see the visitors were getting amusement.  My pleasure at seeing so much water below the barrage dissipated when the Irrigation official accompanying me turned around and said: “look, so much water is being wasted, all this will go in sea. The Kotri barrage is notorious among environmental circles as it is the last one to divert water from Indus into canals before the river reaches the Arabian sea.

Being resident of Jamshoro I visit here usually every month but have never observed such scenery. The official shared such information about the Kotri Barrage which I had never heard before that was the reason which compelled me to write about this Barrage. He kept adding into my knowledge the background of Kotri barrage.

Kotri barrage, initially named as Ghulam Muhammad Barrage. Completed in 1955, it is used to control water flow in the river Indus for irrigation purposes and flood control. It has discharge capacity of 875,000 cusecs. The barrage has a gate controlled weir type barrage with a navigation lock, it has 44 bays, each 60 feet (18cm) wide, and the maximum flood level height of the barrage is 43. In December usually these gates are raised and lowered due to annual closure of barrage during necessary repair and maintenance in the intervening period there is no water flow he added.

Looking at heavy machinery he told these machinery and workforce having been made available at the sites to meet any eventuality. It was interesting to know the information about Kotri Barrage; I was getting interested in the information given by the person. When I turned I saw a canal and inquired about, he told us that Kotri Barrage feeds Fulleli, Pinyari and Karachi canals, it has been maintained by Sindh irrigation department. Now I realized that it was great to come here, although I have been there before, but never had a chance to know about history and purpose of Kotri Barrage.

I had no information or idea about this barrage, before this visit. My cousin laiba was getting bored but I didn’t care for her and kept on listening to the employee. He further told me that many of the political personalities also visited Kotri Barrage. In 2010 former president Asif Ali Zardari also visited during high flood. I was shocked when he shared few incidents happened on Kotri barrage, in which “Mathino Otho” (employee in Sindhology department) and a political leader “Irfan Mehdi” committed suicide, I was saddened to listen that this picnic point has been the suicide point as well. Laiba whom I almost forgot that she was with me and we came here to visit.

Irritated with my behavior she asked me to stop it, she wanted to eat because she was quite hungry. We went to restaurant nearby Almanzar. We saw a huge crowd sitting there having lunch. I observed majority of them were young couples. Most of them were having photography some of them selfies and all that. We had a delicious lunch of “Palo” .

It was fantastic to have such surprises. As importance of the visit, Kotri barrage has its own feature, cold winds of this area are sufficient enough to attract visitors.

It was rainy season when my cousin from Lahore came to our home and asked me to visit Kotri Barrage with her. Being a residence of R.B.B Colony (Right bank Barrage)   I had visited the barrage many times, so I tried to escape but she was not letting me go easily, so I had to agree. “but on one condition”, I said , Dear  Laiba if you ask me, you have to treat me  ‘Palo’ ( a kind  of fish found in river Indus ) in lunch on your  expenses. By god she agreed happily.
According her plan we headed towards Kotri Barrage in the morning.
